Very well said, Jeff. Even though I been involved with these issues for quite a while I still find it very helpful to read this and get a better (and shared) understanding of have the basic terms we use.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At Open&lt;strong&gt;i&lt;/strong&gt;World:Europe 2008 in Lyon Jeff Kahn had a great interoperability/integration example, VGA and DVI video connectors:
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Any normal person can just plugin them together and the system works.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;If the shapes don't match, find a dongle (adapter) that has the right shapes on either end, plugin them together and the system works.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Works with any kind of computer or video card. Works with LCD monitors, CRT monitors, projectors, etc. &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;True many-to-many integration of functionality with very low-barrier interoperability. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
This is so different from most software interoperability attempts to date where there is at best the hope of integration with software developers involved, the interoperability barrier is so high that normal users can't hope to make meaningful functional integration happen on a regular basis.&lt;br /&gt;
